N3 south to Warden or Harrismith, then the N5 towards Bethlehem and the R711 into Clarens. The last stretch over the foothills is the pretty part.
From Bloemfontein

Head east through Ladybrand and Ficksburg on the R64 and R26, then north through Fouriesburg on the R711 to Clarens.
From Durban

N3 north to Harrismith, then the N5 west towards Bethlehem and the R712 or R711 into Clarens. A natural overnight stop on the coast run.
